First Day of Firsts

Just as I felt obligated to post on the last day of the year, I now feel obligated to post on the first day of the year. I should probably reduce my use of the word obligated, huh? It's starting to take on a negative connotation.

Anyway, as goofy kids usually do, my kids are announcing the first action/item/task of the new year.

We had our first family breakfast of the year.

We had our first bathroom-related story at the breakfast table of the year. Oh, the joys of living with all boys.

I had my first guilt-free nap of the year.

The guys are still playing they're first poker game of the year. I don't play poker because that falls in the same category of understanding as internal combustion engines and electricity.

By the way, how old do you have to be to play Texas Hold 'Em in Las Vegas??? Because as soon as Mr. A is legal, we're taking his college fund to Vegas.

Since it's raining today, our first trip to the zoo for the new year will have to wait until next weekend.

Molly is STILL waiting for her first car ride of the new year.

Last night's chime of midnight also brought a feeling of being old. More so than turning 40 did to me.

G-Man was so excited that we started a new decade. Then I realized that he doesn't remember the new year in 2000. So this is a milestone for him. I flashed back 30 years to the 5th grade when we rang in 1980. That was the first decade change I remember. Back then checks had the year pre-printed on them with 197__ (fill in the last digit).

I thought about it some more this morning and after counting on my fingers I discovered that I've now lived in 6 different decades. But before I broke out the Geritol and the cane, I did the math for my parents. They have lived in 9 decades. That definitely sounds more impressive.
