No matter where you are in the country you’re probably a little chilly. Heck, down here in south Florida the temperature has dipped below freezing the past two nights. In the mornings everything outside is covered in frost. The boys still get excited about seeing their breath in the air. They’re cute in a gooberish sort of way.
At home we’ve been drinking a lot of hot tea and hot chocolate to keep warm. But last night I decided to make some mulled wine. Not only is it warm it also makes the house smell wonderful while it’s mulling.
The recipe below is my own concoction and I’ve made it with both wine and cider. I suppose you could do it with apple or grape juice as well. For the wine I use a Malbec or a Syrah. You could use any red wine that you like. Since other flavorings are added, I don’t go all out with the really expensive wine. But I stick with a label that I know.
If you don’t finish all the wine/cider in one evening, you can put it in the frig and warm it up again the next night.
Mulled Wine or Cider
½ cup sugar
½ cup water
Zest of one orange
Orange cut into slices
3 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp whole cloves
1 tsp whole all spice
1 tsp whole coriander
1 bottle of red wine (750 ml) or apple cider (1/2 gallon)
Dissolve the sugar in the water in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the zest, spices, orange slices, and wine/cider. Simmer on low until the flavors combine. Strain before serving. Enjoy!

Can't wait to get home and try this. I've always wanted a good recipe for mulled cider and I know if it's yours I can trust it. If i'm the only one that drinks it, that's ok too at least the house will smell nice and not like teenage boys.
By the way. What happen to global warming. I'm starting to feel like I'm back in Alaska again. Thank goodness i didn't give away all my long johns. It was colder here than in Anchorage yesterday. That is just wrong.
Greeting From the great, white "north"! We had a balmy 19 degrees (Yes, Fahrenheit)this a.m. 8 inches of snow on the ground with the forecast of 4 - 8 inches more by Saturday morning. I will definitely have to makw a toasty warm pot of mulled wine. Great Idea, PLRH!
Sounds super! Thanks for visiting my blog! I enjoyed looking through yours!
Wendy it was 22 degrees (yes, Fahrenheit)here in sunny FL. At least you have the snow to go along with your cold. It's so uncalled for to be this cold and not have snow.
Add a little vodka, and mmmmmm!
Here's a toast to keeping warm!
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!
