It's Been One Week

Since I’ve had a Coca-Cola… or a piece of chocolate… or a cookie.

A week ago, I suddenly decided that I needed to cut most of the refined sugar out of my diet. I’ve thought about it many times but never acted on it. This time was different.

I know that too much refined sugar isn’t good for anyone. Logically, I also know that as I get more mature and my metabolism slows, refined sugar and loads of simple carbs aren’t great for me either. But that wasn’t my initial motivating factor.

What got my attention?

My trousers felt a little too snug in the tush.

If that doesn’t get a woman’s attention, then I don’t know what will.

The first few days were a little rough and I REALLY wanted a Coke or as I call it… “the sweet nectar of life.” I can’t drink diet soda because the artificial sweeteners (including Splenda) give me migraines. However, I wasn’t ready to detox off caffeine so I filled in with tea (unsweetened).

I plan to go another week without the sugar. By then, I should be over the habit. After that, I will have to play by the same rules the kids do and only have sugar-laden goodies as special treats. That means one more week without Coca-Cola, chocolate, or a cookie from the Pastry Goddess. Wish me luck!

Good luck! I did it for about 8 weeks, and I felt great except that I still wanted it...then all hell broke loose. Now, I can see where it's packed back on and I'm going to have cut it all out again. I need to get rid of that sluggish feeling, not to mention losing a couple of pounds is a bonus! Again good luck!

Good for you; I am truly in awe. I need that little hit each day. I wait till the evening and reward myself. It's hard!!

Good for you, Erica! I find myself considering this change too - I eat way too much sugar (3 heaping teaspoons in my morning coffee alone - yike!) and I crash by the afternoon. I'll be excited to hear how your experience goes, trailblazer!

Best of luck to you Erica! You are doing a wonderful job - I'm proud of you!

I know where all of your abandoned sweets are going. I've been eating them all in lieu of smoking. LOL!

You go!
That's awesome!
(and it gives me the inspiration to perhaps do the same. If there were a diet that I could eat only bread I could stick to it no problem...)

Good Luck. I might be able to give up the cookies. But the Coke no way. You can do it.

Hey mom, can you pick some cokes up at the store on the way home? We're out. Thanks!

I knew I liked you! We're on the same wave length. I gave up Coke 37 days ago (and counting) and am trying oh-so-hard to give up other sugars. What did me in? The segment on Oprah with Dr. Oz. Diabetes runs in my family on both sides. But everyone with diabetes was/is overweight and I thought, since I wasn't overweight I didn't have to worry. Then Dr. Oz showed what too much sugar does in your system and then highlighted a woman struggling with diabetes (and amputations) who has never, ever been overweight. Huge eyeopener for me. Giving up Coke has been soooooo hard. (I don't do diet, either) I call Coke "elixer of the gods" I miss it! But I think a good long fast from my beverage of choice is just the thing to change my mindset and consider it the rare treat that it should be. You can do it! I know you can!

One summer, I got a miserable yeast infection and my herbalist told me to cut all refined sugar from my diet. I immediately dropped about 15 pounds. I thought it was wonderful. I was thrilled. Then everyone started telling me I looked gaunt, and praying for me and stuff. I was confused, until several years later (with the pounds and sugar back)I saw some pictures of myself and, yep, I looked gaunt, and in need of prayer.
