...and world peace

My Sweetie and I attended the Miss Insert-Name-of-High-School beauty pageant this week.

I’ll explain our reason for being there at the end of the post.

Let me start off by saying I’m so glad that we don’t have daughters! The outfits that some of the girls wore didn’t leave much to the imagination as my father likes to say. One outfit in particular definitely wasn’t age or lifestyle appropriate.

The entire pageant was painful to sit through. Out of the five seniors competing for the crown only one of them had any skills during the talent segment. Two of the singers really should have opted for a different talent.

The final segment was question and answer. The girls picked a random question out of the fish bowl and answered the question with a well-rehearsed statement. At the end of each answer, my Sweetie and I muttered under our breaths “…and world peace.”

All through the pageant, when I wasn’t silently texting Marcia about current events (gossip), I continually thought how degrading it was for the girls. Granted, while we’re not in the Deep South, we’re still in the South and pageants are BIG. Pageants are family tradition for some girls.

While enduring the awful singing I tried to find something positive about pageants. I finally realized that the girls on stage were gaining incredible self-confidence and practice in public speaking. Another thing about the contestants – they were all different shapes, sizes, and colors. They were fearless when it came to combating the stereo-typical beauty pageant image. I applauded them all whether or not they could sing and no matter their hem length.

So why were we there? Because Mr. A was one of the escorts for the young ladies. He was done-up in a tux with royal blue tie and vest to match his eyes. Our presence wasn’t required but it was really nice to see my eldest dressed in something other than a t-shirt, cargo shorts, and flip-flops.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Just had a flash of a Secret Service Agent in my head. Did he wear those glasses on stage? Maybe it's Men In Black I'm flashing on. LOL anyway. Very handsome.
Sorry you had to endure the pageant those are God awful. Even for those of us that grew up in the south. So glad God blessed us with boys.

I'd have been more impressed with your post had you said they allowed boys to compete too. That would have been interesting.

In high school we had a sweetheart pageant around Valentine's Day. A drama student and I entered on behalf of the TV Production Club (which never met or did anything, but got a great photo in the yearbook and got to participate in things like this). We embraced the opportunity by dressing up in costumes from the horse race scene of My Fair Lady (I wore all white, carried a lacey umbrella and a huge hat with feathers and he wore a gray tux)...it was very over the top! I think we walked onto the stage to the score from Star Wars and kept our bodies really stiff and severe just like the scene that inspired us. Then for the talent portion we acted out a dramatic interpretation (in total silence) to a piece of music where he was a Vampire and I was his craving...all pre-Twilight. It was very inspired. We ended up winning! I think we weirded everyone out just enough to think we were cool. I think there was an interview portion of the pageant, but I can't remember what our answers were.

Anyway, I still have my winning sash and plaque...oh what a night!

Yes, Secret service...I was thinking about the movie "Men In Black" but the pretty royal blue tie threw that out! My sons both did the royal blue at various proms. It seemed like they went to them forever!

WOW! Marcia and I were on the same wave length... A Future CIA / Secret Service man! Another thought was My Oh My how time flys. What a handsome young man! You and S. are proud, I'm sure!

Oh he is adorable. I'm glad we don't have girls too--especially at this...sensitive...time. I'm amazed at the crapola they're wearing too. It's all legs. And I feel like a grandma. But really...

I bet this activity was sheer entertainment. Was it hard to keep a straight face?

Oh look how handsome he is! Why don't all me understand that they look better in a nice suit than in anything else they could possibly choose to wear?

It's funny, the mom of one of Jude's little friends at school is a former Miss Georgia. In a fit of curiosity one night, I YouTubed the Miss USA pageant she was in. Late '80's. Hysterical. HUGE hair. My mother always desperately wanted me to do the pageant thing (we were in Texas!), but thank God I refused!
