However, when we moved to Florida twelve years ago the magic of the beach was lost to me. I just couldn't find it. As much as I love the water, the fear of advancing my skin cancer kept me at home.
Saturday we went to Siesta Beach in the late afternoon to look at the results of the sandcastle building contest. As we walked across the powdery white sand, I mentally criticized the sun worshippers. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to bake themselves. Then I got a surprise. All of the kids at the beach were estatic and joyful. I found myself taking more photos of them than the sandcastles. Viewing the photos on the computer I found the magic of the beach again.

I know what you mean. I wasn't much of a beach kid growing up. The good sun screen wasn't even invented till I was 20 and too much sun just got me sick; you know the drill.
Now I live here and love it. But I don't go to the corner w/o my sunscreen and even then I know where my skin is headed. You must be super-vigilant down there! How do you manage it?
Love living at the beach...well a few miles away, however I try not to get caught up in the tourist thing!
I don't go and enjoy the beach enough. Love the pictures, especially the one of the large woman with the pigtails and tattoo - very intriguing!
The sand castles were great. But the kids playing remind me of all the fun growing up on Pensacola with Daddy. We would play for hours running in and out of the water. Digging holes just have the water fill it back in. Running on the sand dunes (before it became illegal). Of course no sun screen to be had and we would fry or at least I would. I would spend the nest weeks paying for all that fun and peeling off layers of fun. But next weekend we were right back out there. Wow it's been way to long since I've seen the waves. Might have to drive to the shore this after noon.
The beach is my favorite place. My safe place. I cover up these days too. But sill I love the smell, the feel, the mess, the waves all of it.
Love your photos. Love your honesty. In everything.
I am so glad you rekindled your love for the beach. Your pictures are great! Do you ever encounter any problems shooting in public? here in Virginia, people seem really suspicious of cameras, and I have had some unpleasant reactions just being in the wrong place with a lens...just curious about your observations.
@Cynthia - So far I haven't encountered any problems with taking photos in public. Perhaps because I live in a touristy area. Also, I usually don't take photos of people. But when I do I try not to get their faces. Because of your comment I did go back and re-evaluate my photos. I removed two photos from my post simply because you could see too much of the little girl's face.
Thank you for everyone's comments!
I love the beach and love watching people at the beach. I seldom take my camera but mostly because I don't want to have to worry about it if i get swamped by a wave because I'm not paying attention. It happens sometimes! LOL!
These are fantastic shots. i can hear the shouts of joy through my monitor!
I did spend a lot of time at the beach when I was in California for two summers, but other than that I think I have only been to a beach maybe 6 times. I do wish I could get to the beach more often, but you know life tends to get in the way of what I wish for! LOL!
Over from Momalom..
The beach IS happiness to me. Sanibel Island specifically, but any shore line will do. Must have the smell, the feel of sand under my feet, the breezes.. that is bliss.
